Sustainable artist & community arts organizer
After 30+ years as a working artist and 5 years leading community arts efforts, Karen has become passionate about demystifying the business of being an artist.
Like many, she's experienced the disconnect—creating meaningful work while facing unclear processes, rejections, paralyzing fear, and a lack of a supportive network. But stepping into the role of organizer offered a new perspective.
Conversations with artists, collectors, organizers, and jurors revealed a shared frustration: strong work often gets overlooked due to unclear writing, weak presentation, or incomplete submissions. This disconnect holds everyone back—keeping artists from moving forward, and jurors and collectors from recognizing the full strength of the work.
These insights sparked a new path—one built on support, strategy, and creative empowerment.
That’s the heart of Tuveson Studio Strategies: making the business of art more navigable, authentic, and aligned with the artist’s voice.
Art school was a different world when I earned a degree in Painting. Most of what I’ve learned about the business of art came through years of trial, error, and exploration.
I’ve exhibited in galleries and museums, through solo and group juried shows, and have been rejected from more opportunities than I can count. I also established a local arts council and a nonprofit dedicated to supporting artists by offering (paid) public art programs. Along the way, I’ve worked with incredible people—artists, curators, and collectors—who continue to shape how I think about creativity, community and the business of art.
I’ve presented on my personal artwork, public art initiatives, and the role of the arts in strengthening local economies to a wide range of audiences. My talks have explored the intersections of creative practice, community engagement, and sustainable business strategies for artists.
Most recently, I participated in a panel discussion on artist sustainability, highlighting the practical and ethical choices that shape my studio practice. I’m available for keynotes, panels, workshops, and artist talks, and I enjoy sharing real-world insights that empower artists and communities alike.
If you're looking for a speaker who can connect creative vision with practical experience, I’d love to be part of the conversation.
If you’re navigating a unique project, feeling stuck, or want thoughtful guidance tailored to your artistic goals, 1:1 coaching might be the right next step.

I teach a creative modality called Touch Drawing at my local senior center. Simply put, Touch Drawing is an expressive process where images are formed by touch on paper—allowing emotion and intuition to guide the hand.
While this modality is therapeutic in nature, I use it in my personal practice as an 'in-between' after an intense period of painting or mixed media work. I find it meditative and a gentle way to stay connected to my creativity without pressure or expectation.
